Lukashenko: student teams set example for entire country with their energy, patriotism and enthusiasm

President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko has taken part in the closing ceremony of the third labour semester of 2024, held in the format of the nationwide meeting of student teams at Minsk’s Sports Palace

Welcoming the youth, the Head of State said, “Today we have gathered for a special, very pleasant occasion. We are honouring and rewarding our working young people whose energy, patriotism and enthusiasm have been an example for the entire country for many months. It was young boys and girls like you, with burning eyes and a great desire to make their country better, who signed up for the first Soviet student construction team to go to the virgin lands back in 1959.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko also spoke about his experience of working in the student construction teams, when one summer he learnt bricklaying and another summer he was a member of the land reclamation brigade, “It was not only a way for us to earn money, which was also very important. We were becoming very different people: grown-up, independent. We had something to be proud of.”

According to the President, many heads of enterprises and even ministries first showed their leadership qualities in the student teams and still keep their uniform jackets as a sacred labour relic, “Over 65 years, several generations have passed through the student construction movement. It is gratifying that Belarus and Russia are the only countries in the post-Soviet space that have preserved this wonderful youth initiative and breathed new life into it.”
