Lukashenko stressed the importance of introducing scientific developments into practice

It is necessary to make headway with science and especially develop commercially what has been created by scientists – as noted by the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, at a meeting with Belarusian scientists, BelTA reports

“Everything must be used for the benefit of a person – a Belarusian – and Belarus, our country,” the Head of State drew attention. “We can’t do without science. We need to make headway with science and especially we need to develop commercially what you create.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko recalled that earlier the problem of putting scientific developments into practice was an acute one. On the part of scientists, complaints were often heard that the real sector and enterprises were reluctant to take on the use of domestic new developments. Then the Head of State made a decision that the Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences would be responsible for this work. “Scientific inventions depend on the head of the Academy of Sciences. You live and breathe there, look whether it is necessary or not, while he makes a decision and bears responsibility,” the President explained. In case of any disagreement, the final decision is made by the Head of State. “But no one has ever come to see me as an arbitrator,” the Belarusian leader noted.

Vladimir Gusakov, the Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences, explained that a transparent and efficient system for introducing scientific developments has been created in the country. “We have concentrated all research in the country into twelve programmes. And for each task there must be a result – practical developments and implementation. We have this under strict control,” he said.

“You have such a ‘dictatorship’ – stricter than in the country,” the President responded ironically. “Won’t this discourage scientists from working?..”

“Vice versa. The competition for participation in the programmes is open. Everyone who wishes to participate submits documents and undergoes an independent examination,” the Chairman of the National Academy of Sciences clarified.
