Lukashenko praised social work of United Church of Evangelical Christians in Belarus
President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko has praised the social work of the United Church of Evangelical Christians in Belarus during his today’s meeting with representatives of Belarus’ religious denominations, BelTA reports
"Thank you very much. I know what efforts you are making in the fight against such an evil as drug addiction. Thank you for paying great attention to large families and for talking a lot about family values – and your clergy and parishioners are setting an example in this matter. I am aware of this, and these are good concrete actions aimed at improving the atmosphere in our society," the Head of State said in response to a speech by Leonid Biryuk, the bishop of the United Church of Evangelical Christians in the Republic of Belarus.
The bishop recalled the thesis once voiced by the President that any citizen of Belarus can find their way to their own church, “We are very grateful to you that you honour your word.”
Mr. Biryuk added that the United Church of Evangelical Christians pays special attention to social work, primarily among people who are addicted to alcohol and drugs. "At the moment, we have fifteen rehabilitation centres, which offer 18 months of inpatient rehabilitation for addicts. We have good results: approximately 75 percent of these people do not resume their addiction. We are doing this not as an alternative to state-run services, but act in close co-operation with them. We understand that this is a common cause for these people to become worthy citizens of their country," he said.
Believers are also taught patriotism and hard work at the church. “Our creed says that a Christian is to love their country and everything that makes it up: people, culture, history and all other related aspects. We are also aware of your requirements regarding the need for discipline and responsibility of each person in their workplace. We understand that this is really the key to the prosperity of our country. We are also guided by the Gospel teaching. Apostle Paul said, “Whatever you do, do it with all your heart, as for the Lord.”
The bishop emphasised the great efforts of the state aimed at preserving peace, including the interfaith one. "Respect should be the foundation for us. We always pray for peace," he said.
Mr. Biryuk also drew attention to the fact that there are many representatives of large families among the parishioners, and the state policy aimed at supporting and promoting family values is of significant meaning for the church in this regard.
