Lukashenko: our sporting achievements far from being excellent

The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, has been reported today on the Belarusian football development, and among those present at the relevant meeting at the Palace of Independence were Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko (he oversees the sports sector), Minister of Sports and Tourism Sergei Kovalchuk, President of the National Olympic Committee Viktor Lukashenko, Chairman of Belarusian Football Federation Nikolai Sherstnev, and Council of the Republic member Dmitry Baskov

“I have invited you to talk about the situation that is developing in our sport sphere, primarily in football – which is most popular sport, the most beloved sport among our population,” Aleksandr Lukashenko addressed the meeting participants. “Moreover, this is a sport that can be practiced at any time of the day and in any weather conditions in Belarus. It is not hockey which is often presented as a sport which Belarusians play most of all. Hockey is a very expensive sport, it is more difficult to practice it than football. There are other sports that can be discussed today, but – in general – our sporting achievements are far from being excellent, taking into consideration the funds and attention invested by the state into sports. You, like pensioners, are state-supported, and this refers to football as well.”
