As reported, the conversation focused on the situation on the Belarus-EU border. After discussing the refugee problem in detail, the sides came to a certain understanding of how to act and to move forward in solving the existing issues.

The President of Belarus and the Acting Federal Chancellor of Germany agreed that the problem will be addressed at the level of Belarus and the European Union, while the authorised officials representing the both sides will immediately enter into negotiations to resolve the existing problems. In the same context, the desire of refugees to get to Germany will be addressed.

Ms. Merkel also communicated to the President of Belarus the request of the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, to ensure participation of the international organisations – who deal with the problems of refugees and migrants and are already actively co-operating with the Belarusian side – in the process.

Aleksandr Lukashenko and Angela Merkel agreed on further contacts as well.
