Lukashenko lit candle at Holy Dormition Cathedral of Zhirovichi Monastery
On September 19th, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko visited the Holy Dormition Zhirovichi Monastery. At the Holy Dormition Cathedral, the Belarusian leader lit a candle in front of the Zhirovichi Icon of the Mother of God, followed by a short prayer service.
Aleksandr Lukashenko inspected the reconstruction and restoration of the Holy Dormition Cathedral. In fact, this year marks the 505th anniversary of the Orthodox gem of Belarus, one of the most visited shrines in Belarus and a spiritual centre for Orthodox believers. Having endured many tragic events in its history, each time the monastery has been reborn. Great princes, kings, magnates and ordinary people came on pilgrimages to the miraculous Icon of the Mother of God (by the way, this year marks the 555th anniversary of its discovery). To this day, the shrine is well-known both in Belarus and far beyond its borders.
