Lukashenko, Jinping to meet during SCO summit in September

The President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, will meet with the Chinese President, Xi Jinping, during Shanghai Co-operation Organisation summit in September – as stated by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Belarus to China, Yuri Senko, in his talk with the ONT TV channel

“There is such an agreement between the leaders of our countries,” Mr. Senko informed. “The Chinese President has repeatedly invited Belarus’ Head of State to visit China. The Belarusian leader has made a similar invitation to his colleague as well. Sadly, due to pandemic coronavirus restrictions, such a face-to-face meeting has not yet taken place. This year will be important because a meeting of our leaders is planned in September – within the framework of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation summit. A set of issues in bilateral relations will be prepared for the heads of state to discuss. The conversation will be definitely very important and intense. We are preparing to organise this meeting, and we are convinced it will take place in September this year.”

Speaking in general about the level of Belarus-China relations, Mr. Senko noted, “To date, we have reached a new – very high – level between our countries: the so-called ‘iron and stainless brotherhood’. These two characteristics describe the current level of the achieved relations, and they will form the basis of a new draft agreement between our countries, while emphasising such a high level of liaisons. This level of relations has developed primarily due to the fact that China and Belarus know each other very well. They know [each other] because the countries’ leaders enjoy very good, warm, and trusting relations. Unfortunately, over the past year and a half, personal, face-to-face meetings have not taken place due to the pandemic. However, there have been already three telephone conversations that made it possible to discuss many important topical issues.”
