Lukashenko: if I only felt that most Belarusians don’t support me, I would leave
In an interview to VGTRK journalist, radio and TV host Vladimir Soloviev, the President of Belarus, Aleksandr Lukashenko, said that he would have resigned as head of state if he had not felt the support of the Belarusian people, BelTA reports
“If I only felt that the majority of the Belarusian people do not support Lukashenko, the fate of Lukashenko would have been decided by himself within 24 hours,” noted the Head of State. “I would leave.”
“Where?” asked the TV host.
“I would retire,” replied Aleksandr Lukashenko.
The President said that public opinion polls are being conducted in the country, and he requires only truthful information to be reported, whatever it may be. This is especially true of his immediate circle. “It is forbidden to flatter. This is a feature of Belarus and the Belarusian President, sorry for the indiscretion,” noted the Head of State.
“Are you capable of giving away power?” asked Vladimir Soloviev.
“Elementary!” said Aleksandr Lukashenko. “To whom? Let the people decide this. “Anything happens. I’m an earthly person and I understand: if the people decided that enough is enough – well, that’s good. So, the people have made their choice. But now the overwhelming number of people think: ‘Lord, it’s good that he stayed’.”
“Did they see what could have been?” once again specified the journalist.
“Of course, especially after Kazakhstan,” underlined the President.
