Lukashenko explained why Trump not enthusiastic about BRICS
In an interview with the Mir Interstate TV and Radio Company, President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko assessed the prospects of BRICS and explained the importance of Belarus' participation in this organisation, BelTA reports
One of the topics raised during the interview was the republic’s participation in BRICS. Belarus recently received the official status of a partner country, and – speaking of the prospects that open up – the Head of State stressed, “BRICS is the future."
During the conversation, Aleksandr Lukashenko drew attention to the reaction of US President Donald Trump regarding the possibility of the BRICS countries having an alternative currency to the Dollar. "He sharply opposed BRICS, warned that allegedly BRICS was creating some kind of alternative currency to the Dollar," the Belarusian leader noted. “I do not think he said that for nothing (although he may quite often say something for nothing). In this case, his words were probably thought out."
"He said that ‘the pressure will be put on BRICS, and so on’, and this means they sensed an opponent. This means that the future will rely on BRICS,” the Head of State stressed.
According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, no one in BRICS has been particularly involved in creating an alternative currency so far, but it is quite possible over time. "Brazil, China and others do not need it yet (although China is about to need it). Russia and Belarus have long been in favour of having an alternative currency, because we see what the Dollar's monopoly leads to," the President noted.
The Head of State is convinced of the great prospects of BRICS and the importance of Belarus' participation in this organisation. "Look at how many countries want to join it, how many are already its members and how many wish to become its part,” he said. “BRICS unites the leading countries of the world with which we co-operate. What's wrong with us being at the same table with them? I am talking about the routine. When visiting BRICS summits, I can meet with a dozen heads of state and come to an agreement – proposing them to buy certain our products and sell theirs to our country. In short, certain agreements on trade and economic relations are being achieved.”
"Is our place not there? It is there,” Aleksandr Lukashenko continued. "We are going along this path in order to ensure the normal existence of our state, relying on our friends, our neighbours, the Russian Federation, the People's Republic of China, Brazil, and we have normal relations with other BRICS countries."
