Lukashenko explained why he decided to introduce cutting-edge technology in the country

At today’s ceremony to present the 2021 Union State Award in Science and Technology, the Head of State spoke about why decisions on the development of space technology were made fifteen years ago

He also recalled the numerous disputes that arose at that time, “The scientists offered me not to do this, asking what for Belarus needs this space research. I won’t say that they were wrong... We could have borrowed this technology from the Russians as well. But I thought that ultra-modern technologies, such as space, biotechnology, the development of our own rocket science (primarily weapon), nuclear industry, the IT sector will raise the state and the nation to a higher level of development while also pulling up a lot of related industries and areas. This is exactly what happened. Everything that I have enumerated. We boast a very high level of development, maybe, not as large-scale as in Russia or America, but we can co-operate with the Russians, and they demonstrate an interest in our developments.”

Aleksandr Lukashenko summed up, “For me personally, in order to make a decision, it was important to have ‘grains’, ‘lighthouses’ of the high-tech modern development.”
