A few days ago, Russia’s State Duma received a draft appeal of the Lower House of Parliament to request President Vladimir Putin to recognise the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic and Luhansk People's Republic. In this regard, journalists addressed the Belarusian leader to comment on how Belarus will act if a positive decision is ruled in Russia.

“Putin and I will decide how we will act to make it better for Russia and for Belarus. This will be a joint decision,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

Journalists then asked whether Belarus is ready to provide military support to Russia if the latter would wish to assist the republics. Aleksandr Lukashenko replied, “We will provide Russia with any support – military and, if necessary, economic. We will share the last piece of bread with it and also with people who suffer in Donbass. If this happens in Chernigov, then we will help Chernigov residents. This is our firm position. Actually, the issue is different. Ukraine always repeats: there should be peace in Donbass. All right, let’s establish this peace, let’s take steps along this avenue and not dance after the pipe of some commanders from across the ocean. Let’s look at the Ukrainian land instead: after all, the war is on the territory of Ukraine. I have told all Ukrainian presidents about this – and most of all Poroshenko and Zelenskyy.”

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, the war is going on, and it is not the best time now to point fingers at each other. “We need to stop the war and restore a normal life in Donbass. Putin (I told Poroshenko about this) is ready to help with this. That side does not want it. It is probably better for them when intimidation and stronger fights continue. Actually, these are their problems,” he said.
