Lukashenko: building a wall on Belarusian-Polish border is a stupid idea

In an interview with Turkish TRT, the President of Belarus shared his thoughts on Polish authorities’ idea to fence themselves off from our country with a wall to solve the refugee problem

“Apparently, some of the initiators of this wall in Poland have run out of money. Therefore, they want to replenish their wallets with help of this project. Speaking of the wall, it will not cost either $400m or $500m – as they plan. It will cost around $1bn,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

At the same time, the President emphasised, “They have built such a wall along some sections of our border with Poland. As Polish special services admit, the greatest number of refugees penetrated their territory in the areas of this wall. All in all, about 25,000 people. Does it make sense in this case to build such a wall? You know, there was an example: Americans tried to build a wall on the border with Mexico. One president built it, while the other is now destroying it. I think it may happen so in Poland as well.”

The Head of State stressed that Belarus is not nervous in this regard. “This problem is theirs. Let them build. It will not get any worse for us. The situation in Poland is very unstable and it’s not a fact that this government will hold ground. I am convinced that smarter and more rational people will come to power and find better use for this $1bn,” he added.

Aleksandr Lukashenko drew some parallels with not so old events of our modern times, “As you know, a wall was destroyed in Germany in the past between the German Democratic Republic and West Germany. That was a victory for European democracy. Everyone was proclaiming then that no dividing lines and walls should exist on the border! Do they want now to fence the European Union off with a 5.5m-high wall? Somehow it contradicts the ideology and democracy. It is a stupid, silly idea.”
