Lukashenko: Belarus to defend its national interests in harshest possible way
Under conditions of the aggravation of confrontation between the leading players and rapid formation of a new ‘watershed’ between East and West, the choice of Belarus was obvious – as stated by the President at today’s Security Council meeting
“Speaking of Belarus, our choice was obvious. After the discovery of indisputable facts about a real threat to our national security (as you remember, in 2020, we organised military events – deploying half of our army to the western border and showing them that we would not joke), we took the necessary measures to protect our country. A military support mechanism within the framework of our Belarus-Russia Union is absolutely legitimately involved. Moreover, almost immediately after the launch of an active phase of hostilities on the territory of Ukraine, Belarus tried to establish a dialogue between the parties of the conflict, as is traditional. Once again, I want to address those who are shouting: ‘no war’. We do not need this war since – as a result of this conflict between the two Slavic peoples – we can suffer the most,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.
The President noted that Belarus had yet again proposed a safe venue for negotiations to Russia and Ukraine – ‘to organise them and somehow take part in them, without imposing our own will, and so on’. “Our initiative was heard and gratefully accepted: three meetings of Russians and Ukrainians were held in Belarus, and ways towards a peace treaty were outlined there,” he said.
However, as Aleksandr Lukashenko added, professionalism of our military and diplomats had gone unnoticed in the West, “Belarus was declared an accomplice of the aggressor for no good reason. This was immediately followed by new sanctions. As for Belarus, I want to assure you that Belarus will continue to further defend its national interests in harshest possible way.”
