Lukashenko: attorneyship should be under control
Attorneys should act on the basis of law – as stated by Belarus’ President during his meeting with Justice Minister Sergei Khomenko
The Head of State noted that, among its other functions, the Justice Ministry exercises control over notaryship and attorneyship. Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed his hope that the Ministry would manage the processes related to these areas of law.
“These are not simple structures that were created by interested parties. Why have I so actively interfered, and continue to interfere now, while exercising control over the work of notaryship and attorneyship? Some wanted to take advantage primarily for their own benefit, and you remember this. You remember how I had to destroy the gang – as I crudely named it then – that was created there. I do not think we have solved all the issues there. Attorneyship should be under control, but it should act according to the legislation and should be real practice of law. A lawyer should perform their functions with no fear. At the same time, we must understand that this is a statesman whose actions should be based on the norms of law, and not on some invented norms of freedom of speech, and other freedom. We have had enough of this freedom. Thank God, we have seen what freedom they are bringing to us here,” the President stated.
