Lukashenko arrived in Tajikistan on working visit
Belarus’ President Aleksandr Lukashenko has arrived in Tajikistan for a working visit. He will participate in the meeting of the CIS Heads of State Council in Dushanbe, scheduled for October 10th.
The Head of State’s aircraft arrived at Dushanbe International Airport on the afternoon of October 9th. Aleksandr Lukashenko was welcomed on the tarmac by Tajikistan’s Prime Minister Kohir Rasulzoda, Deputy Foreign Minister Farrukh Homiddin Sharifzoda, First Deputy Mayor of Dushanbe Bakhtiyor Sharifi, Belarus’ Foreign Minister Maxim Ryzhenkov, and Belarusian Ambassador to Tajikistan Viktor Denisenko.
A special highlight of the welcome ceremony was a group of children dressed in traditional costumes who warmly greeted President Aleksandr Lukashenko in both Tajik and Belarusian languages.
According to the Belarusian leader’s press service, on October 10th, the CIS heads of state will discuss around twenty issues at the CIS summit. Ahead of the organisation’s 35th anniversary next year, several initiatives aimed at enhancing its international standing are expected to be discussed, including the establishment of the CIS Plus format and granting observer status to the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) within the CIS.
The meeting’s agenda also covers energy security, military co-operation, border protection, and the fight against transnational crime.
A key topic for Belarus at the summit is the statement by the CIS heads of state regarding the upcoming 40th anniversary of the Chernobyl disaster. The co-ordinated efforts of the CIS member states will be addressed during the discussion of this issue at the UN General Assembly session.
Participants will focus particularly on the issues concerning the CIS current activities.
At the conclusion of the event, it is expected that appropriate international documents will be adopted.
