Lukashenko approved draft memorandum on Belarus' commitments for SCO membership

President Aleksandr Lukashenko has signed Decree No. 31, which approved the draft memorandum of Belarus’ obligations in order to obtain the status of a member state of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, the Belarusian leader’s press service reports

Since 2010, Belarus has been a dialogue partner of the SCO, and since 2015 it has observer status with the organisation. In 2022, the procedure for admission of the republic to the SCO membership began. To register participation, it is required to sign and ratify the memorandum, as well as to join a number of documents that make up the contractual and legal basis of this integration association.

The draft memorandum defines Belarus’ general obligations to comply with the goals and principles of the international treaties adopted in the SCO, the terms of accession to such agreements, the financial aspects of joining the organisation, as well as the provisions on replacement of quota positions in its bodies.

The Foreign Ministry has been authorised to sign the memorandum.
