Aleksandr Lukashenko said, “The Constitutional Commission and a special working group of authoritative experts, professionals in various fields of activity, and other smart experienced people worked over the new Constitution draft. Much has been done. I would like to note that the Constitutional Commission has made tried-and-tested proposals, while accumulating numerous initiatives of our citizens.”

The Head of State reminded of the work procedure, “The working group used the draft Constitution – prepared by the Constitutional Commission – as a basis, while focusing on a range of unresolved fundamental issues. As a result, the most important constitutional norms have been developed. The status of the Belarusian People's Congress has been outlined, powers have been redistributed between state authorities, the stability of the state apparatus has been ensured – as the working group sees this. Transitional provisions have been formulated... The opinions of the commission and the working group did not coincide in all aspects but I believe it’s absolutely normal. As ancient thinkers used to say, truth springs from argument. With this in view, the proposals of the Constitutional Commission were developed further after appropriate revision.”

The President added that he had met with the working group several times. “We had to discuss sensitive issues. After all, the results of our work will determine what our country will be like in the future.”
