Ivan Ilyich died at the age of 98. Retired Colonel Ivan Kustov was the last Hero of the Soviet Union living in Belarus.

“It hurts especially when veterans pass away. The bright and kind memory of Ivan Ilyich will forever remain in the hearts of his relatives and friends, as well as millions of people in Belarus who are grateful to the hero for a peaceful life,” reads the statement of the Defence Ministry.

The President of Belarus has expressed his condolences to the family and friends of Ivan Kustov.
