Cuba supports Belarus in resisting attempts to destabilise situation in the country, Bermudez asserts
During his speech at a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council held today via videoconferencing, the President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Diaz-Canel Bermudez, said, “We express our solidarity and support to the Republic of Belarus and its President, Mr. Lukashenko, in opposing attempts of the West to destabilise the situation in the country. We also join the efforts of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, to stop NATO’s expansion to the borders of Russia.”
He noted that Cuba is also experiencing pressure, ‘criminal economic, trade and financial blockade by the United States’ which also unscrupulously took advantage of the situation with the coronavirus pandemic to strengthen it.
“On behalf of the Cuban people, I thank your states for supporting Cuba's efforts to combat pandemics and the blockade. Our selfless people have managed to endure the hardships of this economic war and the cruel restrictions imposed by it,” Mr. Bermudez noted.
The President of Cuba also confirmed his firm commitment to active participation in the Eurasian Economic Union as an observer state, “After gaining this status, we have taken a number of steps to establish mutually beneficial relations based on respect, trust and co-operation – in close collaboration with the structures of the Union and with the support of its member states.”
According to Mr. Bermudez, the study of a possibility of interaction with the N.F. Gamaleya National Research Centre for Epidemiology and Microbiology regarding combination of Russian and Cuban coronavirus vaccines is one of the aspects of co-operation. The President of Cuba believes this step is potentially useful for other EAEU partners as well. He also announced the signing of a joint action plan of Cuba and the EAEU for 2021-2025. The document embraces over 30 areas of activity in the fields of economy and trade, banking and finance, healthcare and culture, agriculture and sports.
