Kremlin representative: Russia highly appreciates Belarus, Lukashenko for assistance in prisoner swap
Russia is expressing its high appreciation to Belarus and its President Aleksandr Lukashenko for help with the prisoner swap between Moscow and the West – as stated by press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov at today’s briefing, TASS reports
“Of course, we must give the highest assessment to the interaction that was carried out with the KGB (State Security Committee), the Foreign Ministry of Belarus, and the assistance that the President [of the Republic of Belarus] Lukashenko personally provided,” the Kremlin representative said.
Earlier, Moscow expressed gratitude to the Belarusian leader for the gesture of goodwill and the pardon of German citizen Rico Krieger, who was sentenced to death and then became one of the participants in the prisoner swap.
The exchange of 26 prisoners between Russia, the US and Germany took place on August 1st, at Ankara airport. This is the largest prisoner swap operation in recent times.
