Kochanova to Cuban Ambassador: each country has the right to develop at its discretion

"We believe the sanctions pressure exerted on both Cuba and Belarus is unlawful and unjustified, and interference in the internal affairs of our countries is unacceptable,” the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, Natalya Kochanova, said on meeting the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Cuba to Belarus, Santiago Perez Benitez

“I would primarily wish to note that good and friendly relations are developing between Belarus and Cuba, and they have passed the test of time. Such a situation has been developing historically, and – undoubtedly – this is a great merit of the presidents of our countries. We understand now that our sovereign states are progressing in accordance with their national interests, but we see that not everyone is satisfied with such a state of affairs in our rapidly changing world. We believe the sanctions pressure exerted on both Cuba and Belarus is unlawful and unjustified, and interference in internal affairs is unacceptable. We have always adhered to these positions, since [we consider] each country has the right to develop as it sees fit, in accordance with its national interests,” Ms. Kochanova addressed the diplomat.

According to the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, Belarus has also experienced what has been happening to Cuba: an unprecedented pressure on the part of the so-called collective West.

"Against this background the interaction that has been developing between our countries is truly important. We have always supported each other, especially on international platforms, in international organisations. I would like to thank you for this support, because you gave us a shoulder back in 2020. We always supported Cuba – and continue doing so – in its independent development,” Ms. Kochanova stressed.
