Kochanova: system of consistent decisions needed to preserve historical truth

"Obviously, only legal mechanisms are not enough to preserve the historical truth and memory of the Soviet people’s heroic feat in the Great Patriotic War,” Natalya Kochanova, the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly, said during today’s international parliamentary conference devoted to the historical memory

Ms. Kochanova believes it is necessary to develop a system of consistent decisions to preserve the historical truth. “Firstly, this envisages consolidation of the right for our state to interpret the Great Patriotic War events on the basis of the historical truth that our Belarusian people know. Secondly, adequate measures to protect these events from information pressure and counteract falsification should be developed jointly by the state and interested organisations. Thirdly, formation of a course of historical policy aimed at promotion of the knowledge about this period, and bringing the achievements of historical science to a wide audience are needed. We should also together seek recognition and condemnation of the genocide of the Belarusian people at the international level,” she explained.

“We would especially like to reach out to every young person so that they cherish the peace and remember what our grandparents went through and what inhuman conditions they experienced during their childhood and young years. A meaningful perception by the Belarusian society of this period of history should become the result of the state-built historical policy regarding the memory of the Great Victory. Our strategic task is to unite the Belarusian nation and make it mature by building a balanced system of values based on the inviolability of sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Belarusian state. We must write a true history of modern Belarus. Every time we need to think and compare our actions with the actions of those who headed to defend our country – though realising that they would die – but never give up,” Ms. Kochanova stated.
