Kochanova: draft Constitution presupposes stability, peace and well-being

This was stated by the Chairperson of the Council of the Republic, Natalya Kochanova, after the meeting on constitutional amendments. She added that the existing Constitution is one of the strongest in the world, while a new draft of the Basic Law has preserved the best traditions of the current document.

Ms. Kochanova noted that the draft Constitution is characterised by the spirit of the people’s rule, “I would like everyone to understand: this is the law by which our society will develop in the future and by which people will live.”

The Chairperson of the Council of the Republic believes it is very important for citizens to take an active part in discussion of the project which will be published next week. “Everything is aimed at keeping our country stable, sovereign, and independent. Introduction [to the Constitution] of another body – the Belarusian People's Congress – means integration of a serious structure of the rule by the people into the existing power vertical,” she said.

Ms. Kochanova addressed Belarusians to take an active part in discussion of the draft Basic Law, “I would like people – when looking at the additions and changes – to primarily assess everything that is happening in the world, the situation that is developing around our country and elsewhere. And then, after reading the document – which is easy to perceive – to see what awaits our country in the future. Times when we might think that there was someone who should think and decide for us have passed. Everyone should now understand the degree of their responsibility for the future of their country and their children. The way our country will develop in the future is laid down in the draft Basic Law... This Constitution presupposes well-being of our people, peace and stability.”
