Kobakhidze: Georgia will not allow absence of election, as in Ukraine

Georgia will hold local election in the autumn of 2025, contrary to the call of the Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe to postpone it, which is very similar to the Ukrainian scenario – as stated by Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze, TASS reports

Earlier, the Bureau of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe issued a statement calling on the government of Georgia to comply with European standards in the field of human rights and democracy. In particular, it urged the authorities to postpone the local government election scheduled for autumn 2025, as it could ‘aggravate the situation’ developing against the current political background in the country.

“This also reminds us of Ukrainization. You know that elections are not held in Ukraine, despite the fact that the mandate of specific public authorities has expired. Of course, we will not allow this to happen. In Georgia, everyone must respect the Constitution and legislation. Local government bodies, mayors, sakrebulo [city assemblies] were elected for a four-year term, and, naturally, this mandate needs to be updated at the end of four years," Mr. Kobakhidze commented on the appeals of the European body.
