Kirby criticised China's idea of immediate ceasefire in Ukraine
Washington opposes an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine, believing that a truce will not contribute to achieving lasting peace – as stated by the US White House National Security Council Co-ordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby, RIA Novosti reports
Mr. Kirby called on the leadership of China, from which such an initiative comes, to get in touch on this issue not only with Moscow, but also with Kiev. “A ceasefire right now would basically ratify Russia’s conquests… Frankly, it’s just not a step that we believe towards a just and durable peace," he said.
According to the White House representative, the attempts of Chinese mediation in the settlement of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict may be one-sided. In addition, Mr. Kirby urged Chinese President Xi Jinping to contact Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy and listen to his point of view.
