Khrenin: Belarus stands for strengthening international security on the basis of collective approach

Belarus stands for strengthening international security on the basis of a collective approach – as stated by Belarus’ Defence Minister Viktor Khrenin at a meeting of defence ministers of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) member states in Indian New Delhi, according to the Belarusian Defence Ministry’s press service

According to Viktor Khrenin, the world is in an extremely difficult historical period, when even outer space and cyberspace are being militarised, the risks of unleashing biological or bacteriological warfare, as well as the use of other types of weapons of mass destruction, are increasing.

“The introduction of innovative technologies in the field of communications, electronics, hypersonic technologies, computer technology and artificial intelligence significantly accelerates the processes of preparing, unleashing military conflicts and commanding the actions of troops. It has become obvious that our world will be completely different,” Viktor Khrenin stressed.

At the same time, the Defence Minister believes that this historical moment can also serve to develop new models of supranational relations, “In this difficult period, faced with powerful external pressure, it is necessary to preserve the sovereignty and independence of our states. It’s vital to build new efficient models of interstate relations, co-ordinate foreign policy and increase defence capability, regardless of any external factors. This is a reasonable reality dictated by the spirit of the times,” underlined Viktor Khrenin.

Nevertheless, the Defence Minister stressed that Belarus’ position remains unchanged, “Realising that in the modern world it is not possible to reliably protect our independence and territorial integrity alone, we stand for strengthening international security on the basis of a collective approach that does not tolerate confrontational thinking, domination or any kind of exclusivity. That’s why we have set ourselves the goal of becoming full members of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation, have completed all the necessary domestic procedures for joining and are ready for full participation in the SCO activities in all areas of co-operation,” the Defence Minister assured.
