The deputies of the Majilis, a lower house of the Kazakh Parliament, agreed with an amendment proposed by the Senate which cancels the need to co-ordinate the main directions of the country’s foreign and domestic policy with ex-president Nursultan Nazarbayev.

In addition, the bill envisages amendments cancelling Mr. Nazarbayev's lifetime chairmanship in the Security Council and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. Meanwhile, the first president will retain his right to address the Parliament and the Government when discussing important issues.

The law is considered adopted and sent to the President of the Republic for signing.

Nursultan Nazarbayev was the president of Kazakhstan for almost 30 years. He resigned on March 20th, 2019 but continued to head the Security Council, the Nur Otan party and the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan. In April 2021, Mr. Nazarbayev announced his decision to leave the post of Chairman of the Assembly of the People of Kazakhstan and to transfer these powers to the current Head of State. Mr. Nazarbayev transferred the powers of Chairman of the Security Council to Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on January 5th, during the period of mass riots in the country.
