Karpenko: no gender limitations for potential Presidential candidates

Belarus does not impose any gender limitations on those who wish to take part in the Presidential race, said Chairman of the Central Election Commission Igor Karpenko on air with Belarus 1 TV channel on November 3rd, BelTA reports

“11 individuals have submitted their applications to the CEC. 4 initiative groups have been registered at the Commission meeting as of now. 2 applicants who had failed to provide all documents required by the law were denied registration. 5 applications will be reviewed at the next CEC meeting,” said Mr. Karpenko.

“Out of 11 applications, 3 were submitted by women. One of them positions herself as a politician, another one – as a representative of the women’s movement, and the third one – as an entrepreneur. Women make themselves heard in the race because statistics say there are more women in Belarus than men. I see no obstacles to that, because Belarus does not impose any gender limitations when it comes to who can participate in the Presidential election and who can not. We only review documents for their conformance to the electoral law,” he added.

The next meeting of the Central Election Commission takes place today, November 4th, to review registration of initiative groups for potential Presidential candidates. As of this moment, 4 initiative groups have already been registered: they support Aleksandr Lukashenko, Oleg Gaidukevich, Aleksandr Khizhnyak, and Olga Chemodanova.

The next stage in the race for those who got the CEC approval is to collect signatures for their potential candidates, starting November 7th. At least 100,000 signatures are required to qualify.

The election of Belarus’ President is scheduled for January 26th, 2025.
