Israeli Parliament approves bill on death penalty for terrorists
Israeli Parliament (Knesset) approved a bill envisaging death penalty for terrorists – as informed by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, RIA Novosti reports
According to several sources, the bill was approved in its preliminary reading by 55 votes in favour and 9 against on March 1st. Most of the opposition deputies were absent from the vote in protest.
In line with the bill, the death penalty will be applied in relation to any person ‘who intentionally or out of indifference causes the death of an Israeli citizen, when the action is committed out of racist motives or hatred of a certain public... and with the aim of harming Israel and the revival of the Jewish people in their homeland’.
If approved by the Israeli Cabinet of Ministers, the bill will return to the Knesset for consideration in the first reading.
