Iraq plans to achieve energy independence and abandon imported gas within 3 years
Iraq wants to abandon imported gas within three years and switch completely to self-sufficiency, TASS reports
While speaking at the opening ceremony of new power plant units in the eastern province of Maysan, the Prime Minister of Iraq, Mohammed Al-Sudani, said, “Within a maximum of three years, Iraq will achieve energy independence and will be able to abandon imported gas. The Government is making investment decisions, and new contracts will be signed with the French corporation TotalEnergies in the near future. In addition, the country's electricity supply system is being improved.”
At the moment, Iraq is heavily dependent on electricity supplies, as well as fuel for its power plants from Iran, importing up to 50m cubic metres of natural gas daily.
