In 2022, US suicide deaths reached record high in 80 years

The US National Centre for Health Statistics registered a record number of suicides in 2022 – 14.3 deaths per 100,000 standard population – the highest figure since 1941, TASS reports

It is reported that nearly 50,000 Americans died by suicide in 2022. Among males, the suicide rate was highest for those aged 75 and older – almost 44 deaths per 100,000 – twice the rate for those aged 15-24.

It was also found that women are four times less likely to commit suicide than men, although they are more likely to have suicidal thoughts.

Moreover, high suicide rates are observed among ethnic minorities, e.g., American Indians and Alaska Natives have suicide rates that are nearly twice the average seen for other social groups.
