IFFHS recognised Yashin as greatest goalkeeper in football history

Lev Yashin, the former goalkeeper of Dinamo Moscow and the USSR national team, was recognised by the International Federation of Football History and Statistics (IFFHS) as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, TASS reports citing the organisation’s press service

Second place in the ranking went to Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon, while third place went to German goalkeeper Manuel Neuer. The top-10 also included Spaniards Iker Casillas and Ricardo Zamora, Englishman Gordon Banks, Czech Petr Čech, Italian Dino Zoff, and Germans Sepp Maier and Oliver Kahn.

Lev Yashin played for Dinamo Moscow from 1950 to 1971 and for the USSR national team from 1954 to 1967. With Dinamo, he became a five-time USSR champion and won the USSR Cup three times. He also became a silver medallist five times and a bronze medallist once at the USSR championships. As a member of the Soviet national team, Yashin won the 1956 Olympic Games and the 1960 European Championship, and was also the silver medallist at the 1964 European Championship. He competed in three world championships (1958, 1962 and 1966), and in 1966 the USSR national team came fourth in the World Cup. Yashin is the only goalkeeper in history to win the Golden Ball. He passed away in Moscow on March 20th, 1990 at the age of 61.
