“Creation of a Historical Policy Council on a voluntary basis was discussed. The task was set to make proposals and to co-ordinate this activity on the basis of a state agency,” Mr. Sergeyenko said.

The Head of the President Administration added that the work of specialists and experts will be more co-ordinated, while approaches to work will be revised. The latter will be aimed at ensuring that complex historical topics are conveyed in a simple language to a wide range of citizens.

“History does not need to be redrawn; it should be shown objectively and truthfully. It is necessary to show everything – including the pages that are not entirely pleasant and also the heroic pages that someone is trying to artificially distort. There should be a common approach, a common concept of presenting the material and a major historical layer that has been formed over decades and centuries," Mr. Sergeyenko added.

He stressed that time has come to systematise the work and co-ordinate its direction more clearly. “We stand for the truthful coverage of all pages of our history – to resist modern falsifications and attempts to distort it. For this purpose, certain innovations are being proposed. Without breaking anything of what has already been created we need to go further,” Mr. Sergeyenko said.

Amendments to the academic curriculum and creation of a textbook on history of the Belarusian statehood are also planned.
