Higher Attestation Commission Chair: 356 applicants received academic degrees in 2024
The Higher Attestation Commission summed up the results of 2024, with its Chairperson Aleksandr Guchok revealing how many academic degrees were awarded, in which sciences they were defended most often and what research formed the basis of dissertations
“Last year 356 applicants were awarded academic degrees,” Chairperson of the Higher Attestation Commission of Belarus Aleksandr Guchok said. “Of them, 48 became Doctors of Sciences and 308 became Candidates of Sciences.”
Among the degree holders are 36 foreign citizens from ten countries, including representatives of China (16 people) and Russia (9 people). There were also applicants from Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, Lebanon, Vietnam, Venezuela, Iran and Tajikistan.
The average age of Candidates of Sciences was 37 years, while the average age of Doctors of Sciences stood at 52 years. Men and women were almost equally divided: 179 and 178 respectively. Moreover, women were even more numerous among Doctors of Sciences – 52 percent.
“Dissertations were defended in all 23 branches of science,” Mr. Guchok noted. “Most of all works were in technical sciences: 65. The second place is occupied by medical sciences with 64 dissertations, followed by physio-mathematical sciences with 34 works.”
The Doctor of Sciences degrees were most often defended in medical, physico-mathematical and philological sciences.
According to the Chairperson of the Higher Attestation Commission, the research presented in the Dissertations was carried out within the framework of state scientific programmes, sectoral scientific and technical projects and grants of the Belarusian Republican Foundation for Fundamental Research.
“In the organisations of the Education Ministry 143 dissertations were carried out, in the institutions subordinated to the Healthcare Ministry – 71 works, while the National Academy of Sciences conducted 69 works,” Mr. Guchok added.
