Earlier it was reported that forty US states sued Google, accusing the company of tracking geolocation and violating user privacy.

“This $391.5 million settlement is a historic win for consumers in an era of increasing reliance on technology,” Connecticut Attorney General William Tong said.

In 2018, the Associated Press reported that 2 billion devices running Google-owned Android, as well as hundreds of millions of iPhone users who use Google Maps or Search, were affected by the location tracking issue.

It turned out that partially received information about geolocation can provide information about the identity of a person and his actions. Attorneys general investigating the case believe that Google is using the data to offer targeted advertising.

The company has now promised to make its location-related activities more transparent to users.
