Golovchenko: EAEU priorities are industrial co-operation, food, logistics

Speaking at the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council meeting on December 13th in Moscow, Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko outlined priority development areas for the Eurasian Economic Union its member countries should focus on

The first area for interactions, according to the PM, is industrial co-operation and technological sovereignty.

“Let’s have some numbers to better understand how important the industrial sector is: industrial production in the EAEU exceeded $1.1 trillion in January-September 2024. We believe that one of the tools that help us achieve our industrial development objectives is accelerating work related to subsidising co-operation projects in priority industries out of the EAEU budget,” Mr. Golovchenko said.

According to the Belarusian PM, the value of the farming sector and food security rose significantly in the recent months. The EAEU partners, he reminded, discussed those issues last June.

“Prices for some products like butter, potatoes, cabbages, apples fluctuate significantly in our countries, and some sign of mild shortages are observed. We believe that handling the extant risks and providing our countries with required amounts of key products, let me emphasise, at acceptable prices, would be far more difficult for each member country individually than for all our countries together,” he said.

Mr. Golovchenko named stable transport and logistics systems as key factors supporting economic growth in the EAEU and promoting Eurasian products at foreign markets.

“I would like to address the issue of updating the transport pool used for domestic and international cargo and passenger transport in the EAEU. We need new freight rail cars to carry our products, naval vessels of various classes and capacities, cargo and passenger jets, passenger road vehicles. As I have mentioned earlier, those are all promising areas to develop industrial co-operation in. It would not be right, I think, to hand this enormous slice of our domestic market where demand is to a great extent funded by public money, to third party producers,” added the PM.

As Roman Golovchenko also reminded, Belarus is going to take reigns as the chair of the EAEU bodies in 2025.

“I’d like to assure everyone that Belarus is going to handle this mission extremely responsibly and do everything to ensure the further incremental growth of the Eurasian Economic Union,” he concluded.
