Golovchenko: Belarus will continue to protect its economic interests

Belarus will continue to protect its economic interests in the face of western sanctions – as stated by Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko in his talk with Interstate TV and Radio Company Mir, BelTA reports

"We had no feeling of confusion or anxiety. We had been preparing in advance – taking retaliatory measures and conducting internal transformations. We have been observing for a long time how economic sanctions are being used to punish the Russian Federation. Therefore, the assistance and experience of our Russian colleagues also helped us cope with these issues," Mr. Golovchenko said.

From January 1st, 2022 on, Belarus is imposing a food embargo on a number of goods from the states that demonstrate unfriendly actions against our country – as a response to sanctions. "This is not the final measure but an element of the response that we have developed. Others are also in mind. We hope that common sense will prevail and this sanctions confrontation will stop. If not, we will continue to protect our economic interests," the Prime Minister stressed.

Mr. Golovchenko also added that interests of western politicians and businesses should be differentiated. "Belarusian partners have always been viewed as predictable, conscientious and responsible around the globe. Many businessmen and entrepreneurs are interested not only in maintaining, but also in developing economic ties with our enterprises. They are constantly giving us signals about this from different platforms, while – to put it mildly – harshly criticising their own politicians. Therefore, the demand and desire to work with us, including among European businesses, are high," the Prime Minister emphasised.
