Global warming is strongest in last 200 thousand years

The global warming observed now is the strongest in the last 200 thousand years, said the Secretary General of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), Petteri Taalas – as reported by TASS

The expert drew attention to the events of the last century, “We began to use the planet’s fossil resources – oil and gas – which led to an increase in carbon dioxide emissions into the atmosphere. These are greenhouse gases that increase the temperature of the lower layers of the atmosphere. There has not been such a strong warming for two hundred thousand years. There is very clear scientific evidence that this would not be possible without intensive burning of coal, oil and gas.”

WMO Secretary General urged not to confuse weather fluctuations and climate change. He also noted that any weather fluctuations should not be explained by climate change. So, a cold winter does not yet indicate the cessation of warming while a warm winter does not necessarily mean climate change. “We still have the usual weather fluctuations along with the ongoing climate change,” he concluded.
