Germany accuses US and EU for charging high gas prices

Liquefied natural gas prices have risen due to unscrupulous suppliers in the European Union and the United States – as noted by the German Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action Robert Habeck, RIA Novosti reports

According to the official quoted by Die Welt, countries officially friendly to Germany often play against Berlin in the fuel market.

“Some countries, including friendly ones, sometimes achieve astronomical prices [for their gas]. Of course, that brings with it problems that we have to talk about. <...> The United States contacted us when oil prices shot up, and the national oil reserves in Europe were tapped as a result. I think such solidarity would also be good for curbing gas prices,” Robert Habeck pointed out.

Moreover, the official turned to the European Union with a request to control the behaviour of the EU member states in this issue, resorting to the necessary market mechanisms.

“The EU should pool its market power and orchestrate smart and synchronised purchasing behaviour by the EU states so that individual EU countries do not outbid each other and drive up world market prices,” Habeck added.
