Gaidukevich on Lukashenko’s personnel shuffles: every appointment — with people in mind

President of Belarus Aleksandr Lukashenko adopted personnel decisions concerning seven Belarusian districts, the city of Minsk, Bellegprom Concern, as well as several essential ministries and enterprises and diplomatic corps. In his talk with Alfa Radio, Oleg Gaidukevich, a member of the House of Representatives of Belarus’ National Assembly, explained what impact the appointments will have on Belarus’ development.

Oleg Gaidukevich noted that since he took office, the Belarusian leader has always said that officials should not alienate themselves from the people, “‘At every meeting of the Belarusian People’s Congress, at every sitting, the President tells officials not to forget that they are ordinary people who will not have their positions one day, and then they will have to look other people in the eye.”

The speaker also highlighted the fact that yesterday, the President of Belarus appointed many executives, whose work determines the development of particular enterprises in Minsk and across the country, “And that reaffirms the sovereignty. Today, for example, in most cases, Brussels or the US ambassador are appointing officials in Ukraine, Moldova and other post-Soviet countries.”

Oleg Gaidukevich emphasised that Belarus has a distinct top-down structure of power, “That’s once again the sovereignty, the governability. This model demonstrates the effectiveness of governance — precisely in times of crisis in the country’s development, when we face certain challenges.”

The MP stated that the President of Belarus sets the task for officials to show professionalism and demonstrate results, “We see how much the President values the people in his team, how carefully he treats them. But he would never forgive a lack of results, sloppiness or reluctance to work.”

The speaker added that there are no untouchable persons in Belarus, “And every official appointed to a post must remember this.”

In addition, Aleksandr Lukashenko made it clear when appointing local authorities that he is well aware of the situation in specific areas where personnel changes are taking place. Commenting on these words, the MP noted, “Strong regions — a strong country. Minsk, for instance, cannot make Belarus strong solely on its own. Every region is crucial, and every region needs to be developed.”

Oleg Gaidukevich stated that Belarus has adopted a number of documents for developing regional self-government, “In my opinion, today's officials have sufficient leverage and authority to make independent decisions on many issues and take responsibility for them.”

The MP summed up, “Every appointment — with people in mind. The President always sets the task: people, the Belarusian nation, come first. We work for them.”
