FM: Belarus supports establishment of International Day against Unilateral Coercive Measures
On April 14th, Belarus’ Deputy Foreign Minister Igor Sekreta, as the National Co-ordinator of the Republic of Belarus, took part in the 3rd meeting of national co-ordinators of the member states of the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter, held in Moscow, sb.by reports with reference to Belarus’ Foreign Ministry
The Foreign Ministry noted that the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter was founded in 2021 and currently unites 19 states: Algeria, Belarus, Bolivia, Venezuela, Zimbabwe, Iran, China, North Korea, Cuba, Laos, Mali, Nicaragua, Palestine, Russia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Syria, Uganda, Equatorial Guinea and Eritrea. The Group works within the United Nations and other international platforms to uphold the primacy of international law and the provisions of the UN Charter in international relations.
It is reported that Mr. Sekreta spoke during the general discussion at the meeting of the national co-ordinators. In his speech, he called for special attention to be paid in 2025 to events dedicated to the 80th anniversary of the United Nations. The Deputy FM stressed the importance of the International Delegate’s Day, which was established on the initiative of Belarus and will be celebrated by the international community on April 25th, the day when the United Nations International Conference began its work eighty years ago in San Francisco. Strong support was also expressed for the work of the Group of Friends to establish an International Day against Colonialism and an International Day against Unilateral Coercive Measures.
Belarus’ Deputy Foreign Minister called on the Group’s participants to take further steps to inform the international community about the negative impact of unilateral coercive measures on global food security and sustainable development.
On the sidelines of the meeting of the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter, Igor Sekreta also had a working meeting with Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Vershinin. During the meeting they discussed topical issues of bilateral co-operation within the framework of international organisations. Special attention was paid to the co-ordination of the actions of the two countries in order to preserve the central role of the UN in addressing issues of maintaining international peace and security, as well as in organising international assistance to countries in need of it in the field of economic and social development. They also discussed joint steps by Belarus and Russia to support each other’s initiatives in the General Assembly and other UN bodies. They also discussed ways of improving the work of the Group of Friends in Defence of the UN Charter and further developing its potential for protecting common interests at the UN and other international platforms.
