Federation Council approves use of Russia’s military abroad

The Federation Council has approved the Russian President’s request for the use of the Armed Forces outside the country in connection with the situation in Donbass. The resolution was unanimously adopted yesterday, on February 22nd, at an extraordinary meeting of the Upper House of Parliament, TASS reports.

153 senators voted in favour of the decision.

“The Federation Council decides to give consent to the President of the Russian Federation for the use of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation outside the territory of the Russian Federation on the basis of generally recognised principles and norms of international law. The total number of formations of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, the areas of their operations, their tasks, the period of stay outside the territory of the Russian Federation are determined by the President of the Russian Federation in accordance with the Constitution of the Russian Federation,” the document reads.

The resolution comes into force from the moment of its adoption.
