Expert: CSTO is of paramount importance
The Collective Security Treaty Organisation (CSTO) must be strengthened and expanded – as noted by political scientist Aleksei Belyaev, the Dean of the Journalism Faculty at the Belarusian State University, in his talk with Alfa Radio
“We see that CSTO is going through difficult times today, with [foes] trying to destroy the organisation, as it poses a real threat to the West. That’s why games are being played around Armenia,” the expert pointed out. “However, we see that in conditions of real threats (events in Georgia, attempts to muddy the waters in a range of Central and Central Asian states), the Collective Security Treaty Organisation is vital. If you are told that you don’t need an alliance and have no one to fear, these are probably the words of those who are just waiting to weaken and then destroy you. So we need the military-political bloc like air, especially now, when we see that the situation in the sphere of international security is deteriorating, including directly on our borders. Today, security has been violated, and we are forced to defend ourselves. In this regard, CSTO must be strengthened, expanded and turned into a full-fledged defence alliance.”
