Expert commented on Trump’s Ukraine statements
The US President elect Donald Trump recently said that Ukraine is not against making a deal with Russia to settle the conflict. Belarusian MP Aleksandr Shpakovsky commented on that when talking to Alfa Radio.
According to Mr. Shpakovsky, the recent events point to preparations for a global settlement process being currently underway.
“The global picture does not consist of Ukraine only; it includes events happening in other regions that serve as stages for the global conflict of geopolitical interests. I mean the Middle East and Syria. As for Ukraine, it is now a pie to be cut into pieces. The question is, if there’s going to be some sort of a backroom deal, or not. That is where opinions differ. The collective Western establishment is now a battleground between the trumpists, the imperialists, and the globalists. The top Russian military-political decision makers are also divided about viability of any deals. Smaller countries also have their opinions which, nevertheless, carry some geopolitical weight, like the official Minsk’s position. So the situation is fluid,” he said.
The expert believes, however, that the extent of the Ukrainian leadership’s influence over the course of the events is diminishing.
“Ukrainian leaders and, of course, Volodymyr Zelenskyy in particular, are responsible for the decay of the state governance. He drove his country into a corner by destroying its industrial potential, economy, energy, and demography. Imagine 9 million people leaving the country (not to mention combat losses)? Those include women who are now having children in Europe. That’s why Zelenskyy is shucking and jiving, making all sorts of emotionally charged statements. In reality, his main concern is to get out of this in one piece. Because even freezing the conflict can lead to a round two in the future: we know how our ‘Western partners’ operate. But a ceasefire means elections in Ukraine,” he said.
