Expert: Belarus sees its future in BRICS
In the near future, Belarus will become a full member of BRICS – as noted by political expert Vadim Borovik in his talk with Alfa Radio, commenting on the decision to hold the organisation’s summit in Rio de Janeiro on July 6th-7th, as well as harsh statements by the United States against this association
BRICS as alternative to global financial system
According to the expert, Washington is not interested in creating a powerful centre for economic co-operation, which could become an alternative to the existing system of international settlements and a prerequisite for the introduction of a new reserve currency. “It was explicitly stated that the most severe sanctions will be imposed against the BRICS countries if they think about it and take concrete steps,” he explained.
BRICS as challenge for Washington
As Mr. Borovik noted, the United States has already declared that it views BRICS as a threat. “If Washington’s top leaders say they are ready to resist, then there really is a danger for them. Today's global economy is based on the Dollar as the main reserve currency, and it can easily be printed. In turn, other countries are working, producing, and earning money,” he said.
BRICS: strategy for the future
Mr. Borovik believes BRICS remains an important direction for the development of the global economy, despite external pressure. “Some may not be interested in developing alternative economic associations, but this does not mean that Washington is omnipotent. True, it controls 25 percent of the global economy, and China controls 17 percent. At the same time, the combined economic potential of the BRICS countries already exceeds that of the G7. Interestingly, Donald Trump has begun talking of Russia's possible return to the G8 format, but time will tell how this will be implemented in practice,” he noted.
Belarus in BRICS: partnership and prospects
According to the expert, BRICS is of strategic importance for Belarus as well. “Minsk is a full-fledged partner of this organisation, and I am sure that we will become its full member in the near future. When in Kazan, Vladimir Putin stressed that Belarus' contribution to BRICS would be significant and positive. The Republic of Belarus always takes a constructive position, its proposals are taken into account, and the country's key partners – Russia, China, the UAE, and others – are already members of the association. Belarus sees its future in BRICS and intends to make the most of its membership, while contributing to the development of the organisation,” Mr. Borovik stated.
