Expert: Belarus can feed itself and others in abundance

The Belarusian economic model was built gradually through the President’s rational decision-making based on the proven national principle of ‘we do not break the old, but build the new patiently’. The Head of State restored the five-year plans to guide the economy in the right direction and began to set clear and relevant priorities for each of them – as stated by Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Mikhail Kovalev, Professor at the Belarusian State University’s Department of Analytical Economics and Econometrics, sb.by reports

“For the first five-year plan since 1996, the first Belarusian People’s Congress approved three priorities: food (it was necessary to quickly feed the population and eliminate the card system), exports (the country was in dire need of currency and modernisation of its enterprises) and housing. Time has shown how accurate these priorities were then: the President always intuitively felt the main problems of the country. The fact that agriculture is now a priority in every five-year period is not surprising, because there’re 60 acres of farmland for every Belarusian – three times more than the world average. This means that we can feed ourselves and others. We are succeeding in this: exports of Belarusian agricultural products, according to the WTO, have already exceeded $8.3bn,” the expert said.
