Expert: attack on Venezuela may lead to increased migration to US

The US military invasion of Venezuela could eventually cause an increase in migration from Latin America to the United States – as stated by Orlando Perez, Professor of Political Science at the University of North Texas, TASS reports

In his article posted on the Responsible Statecraft online magazine, Mr. Perez wrote, “A US-led intervention – even a limited one – would have a destabilising effect on Venezuela and the region. It risks spilling beyond Venezuela’s borders, drawing Colombia and even Pacific maritime routes into a widening theatre of operations.” He warned that it could create a vacuum in the humanitarian and security fields, driving a new wave of migration northward towards the United States.

In his opinion, undermining the security system in Venezuela could accelerate the spillover flows of migrants to the United States, which would further exacerbate the burden on regional refugee reception systems, which are already operating at the limit of their capabilities.
