European Commission to ask EU states to replenish bloc’s budget

Next summer, the European Commission may ask the EU member states to make additional contributions to the 2021-2027 long-term EU budget in addition to 1.8 trillion Euros agreed in 2020, including because of assistance provided to Kiev, TASS reports with reference to Bloomberg

European Commission Vice President Valdis Dombrovskis and EC officials told Bloomberg, “We need in a sense to replenish the EU budget, because many of the reserves were used during the first years [of the EU’s seven-year budget period from 2021 to 2027].”

EU member states would need to bolster the EU’s long-term budget for 2021 to 2027 via additional national contributions during its mid-term review, which is supposed to be concluded this summer, according to an unnamed official. He also clarified that the additional costs are related to the hostilities in Ukraine and the energy crisis.
