During the meeting of EU foreign and defence ministers in Brussels, they discussed the Strategic Compass. The programme reflects the objectives of the European Union in matters of security and defence, identifies relevant threats, and should help to better respond to external crises. It is aimed at protecting the EU and its residents and is designed to improve existing defence capabilities.

The strategy should be approved at a meeting of EU leaders on March 24th-25th.

The document notes that ‘the EU should act more quickly and decisively when facing crises, improving the readiness of EU armed forces and civilian experts, as well as developing a European Union rapid deployment capacity of up to 5,000 troops to quickly react to different types of crises’.
