EU, NATO agree to strengthen co-operation due to conflict in Ukraine
The European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance plan to intensify co-operation because of the aggravation of the Ukrainian conflict, RIA Novosti reports
An agreement on strengthening ties between the two organisations is to be signed today, January 10th, by the Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance Jens Stoltenberg, the President of the European Council Charles Michel, and the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen.
"NATO remains the backbone of the allies' collective defence, and it is crucial for Euro-Atlantic security. We recognise the value of a stronger and more effective European defence, which makes a positive contribution to global and transatlantic security," the joint statement reads.
The document notes that NATO and the EU commit to take the partnership to a new level, to mobilise all the tools available – be they political, economic or military – to achieve common goals.
